Uses: The comparative is used to compare or contrast people,
things, activities, or ideas to one another. Look carefully at the
following examples
• Comparison of equality:
Juan es tan alto como Felipe
Juan is as tall as Felipe
• Comparison of inequality:
La casa de Cristóbal es más
grande que la mía.
Cristóbal’s house is bigger than mine.
José habla tan rápido como
Teresa
José speaks as fast as Teresa
Mi computadora funciona más
despacio que la tuya
My computer works slower than yours
Elena tiene tantos amigos
como Justo y Pablo
Helena has as many friends as Justo y
Pablo
Tú tienes menos discos
compactos que yo
You have fewer compact disks than I
1. Comparison de equality are expressed with:
tan + adjective (adverb) + como
-Ella es tan lista como su hermana
-No escribe tan bien como su hermana
-She is as clever as her
sister
-She does not write as
well as her sister
tanto (-a, -os, -as) + noun + como
-Ella tiene tantas cualidades como su
hermana
-She has as many
qualities as her sister
2. Comparison de inequality are expressed with:
más(menos) + adjective(noun,adverb) + que
- Ellos son más fuertes que tú
-They are stronger than you
- Ellos tienen más fuerza que tú
-They have more strength
than you
- Ellas corren más rápido que tú
-They run faster than you
• To express than before numerals in affirmative
sentences, de is used:
-Han trabajado más de ocho horas
-They have worked more than eight hours.
• If the sentence is negative, que is used:
- No han trabajado más que diez horas
- They have not worked more than ten hours
· When English uses an indefinite word (anyone, anything)
after que, Spanish uses a negative word (nadie, nada).
- Tiene más fuerza que nadie
- He has more strength than anyone
· When the antecedent is an adjective or an adverb, than
is expressed by de lo que
- Esa tarea fue más fácil de lo que habíamos pensado
- That homework was easier than we had thought
- Valía mucho más de lo que queríamos gastar
- It was worth more than we wanted to spend
