 Word processing software
 Word 2007 now on all student campus computers & labs
 Interface is very different from previous versions


All previous functions still there—just reorganized
Some new features as well
 Locate the Word shortcut on your desktop & double click (if missing follow
below):
 Create Shortcut to Word:









(Similar method for shortcuts to other programs)
Click on “Start” at far, lower left corner
Go to “Programs”
Look for “Microsoft Office”
Mouse over “Word” (DON’T CLICK YET)
Right click over “Word”
Select “Create Shortcut”
New Shortcut appears in this list as “Microsoft Office Word (2)”
Mouse over the new shortcut, click (hold down) & drag the shortcut onto your Desktop
then double click on your new short cut
 Another method: StartProgramsMicrosoft OfficeWord

 Click on Home tab—key functions; Clipboard
(cut/paste), Font, Paragraph (spacing,
bullets/numbering, alignment, etc.), Styles, Editing
(Find, Replace, etc)

Some other items: additional functions will appear on a new set of tabs. E.g.
If you insert a picture, you will get the “Picture Tools” “Format” tab that
allows you to do some interesting things with your image. The Picture Tools
Format tab will also appear when you click on an image to edit it/move
it/etc.

Create a Document
 Start drafting something about you. You’ll have about 5 min. to draft anything
you want. This is a SMALL, BRIEF, SAMPLE piece—nothing is permanent
 Once done try to play with the following from the Home tab’s Font group:
 Highlight and change the font (e.g.. Calibri) of some text to another
 Change the colour of some text
 Make some words bold (B), italic (I) or underlined (U)
 Change the style (Heading 1, 2, 3 etc)
 In Home tab’s Clipboard group
 Move the first word to the end of the text
 Highlight the first word, use the scissors, move your cursor to the end of
your text, click on Paste.
 Move it back
 In Paragraph
 Change the alignment, the spacing, create a number or bulleted list
 Spell check your document from the Quick Access Toolbar at the top (or the
Review tab)

Save the Document
Click on the Logo at top
Save As—what are the options
Save As—select Word 97-2003
New window appears
Click on My Computer on the left to find your U:drive
Click on your U: drive then open the tech_activity folder
Change the file name to something you recognize
Click on Save
Exit Word by the Logo—Close or the X at the far upper right
of the Word window
 You’re done with Word for now

 Keep PPT open. Go to the Logo and select New then Blank









Presentation
You now have a presentation with one slide
On the Home tab, in the Slides group, click on Layout
Select Two Content
Retrieve the file you made in the folder tech_activity
Double click on it and Word will open. Copy the text.
Paste the text into your PowerPoint slide in one of the two content
boxes.
If you brought a picture, mouse over the transparent insert icon for
Insert Picture.
Create a title in the top text box, e.g. All About Me, your name, etc.

Editing
 Once done try to play with the following
 from the Design tab’s Theme group:
 Click on a theme in the bar and see how your slide changes
 Change the colour of some text
 Make some words bold (B), italic (I) or underlined (U)
 In Home tab’s Slides group
 Add a New Slide & change it’s Layout
 In the Slides view to the far right, drag your new slide to the top
 Move it back
 In Insert tab’s Illustrations group
 Select Picture, and insert an item from the sample pictures
 In the Picture Tools Format tab, play with the Adjust and Picture
Styles group

Creating a Show
 Add three more slides varying the layout and put some
“dummy” place holder content in them.
 In View tab, Presentation Views group, click on Slide
Sorter and arrange your slides in some order by
dragging and dropping.
 In Slide Show tab, Start Slide Show group, select From
Beginning to see your presentation. Click to advance
through the slides.
 Click or press Enter to return to PPT
