Seizures or ‘fits’ in newborns are a medical emergency and require urgent treatment. Seizures are impossible to detect without continuous brain monitoring using an EEG machine. Specialist expertise is also required for EEG interpretation and all too often, no such expert is on-hand in the neonatal intensive care unit. The INFANT Centre at UCC has pooled its extensive database of newborn EEG recordings and machine learning expertise with IBM’s stream processing capability to create a unique clinical decision support platform. The result: increased rates of successful detection of neonatal seizures, in drastically reduced timeframes, to improve outcomes for the most vulnerable members of our society. This presentation will give an overview of the current state of the art in brain monitoring in the neonatal intensive care unit.. It will then be shown how such events can be automatically detected using the InfoSphere Streams platform, and alarms sent to on-call specialists to assist in providing the highest quality of care.
