1 Introduction
1.1
Purpose
This document provides a step-by-step guide to setting-up TM1 to run in a
Citrix environment. These steps reflect the recommended practices for
obtaining the best performance from TM1 in a Citrix environment.
1.2
Applicability
This document was written using an environment that contains Citrix
Metaframe 1.8 running on Windows Terminal Server. This document is
applicable to Cognos TM1 9.1 and prior.
1.3
Exclusions and Exceptions
No exclusions or exceptions have been identified.
2 Step 1: Setting up Citrix clients as “local” users
As an Administrator of the Citrix server you will need to install TM1 somewhere on
the Citrix box. The install needs to be on the hard drive (ie. C: or D:)
For this document purpose you will want to install TM1 Perspectives. So run the
install and choose the “custom” option. Check off Client, Perspectives and Architect
for products to install.
Once the products are installed you will need to generate a Perspectives license.
Each Citrix client user will have to have a Perspectives license generated but I will go
over this later in the document.

Next you will need to setup a profile for each user on the Citrix box. To setup user
profiles click on Start->Run and type in “usrmgr”. This will bring up NT’s user
manager dialog box. You will need to add each user and select what group you
want them to be part of on the Citrix box.

In some cases your domain network will be setup and these profiles will already be
present.
Ok as Administrator you installed TM1. Later versions of TM1 places a TM1p.ini file
in the C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Cognos\TM1
By default the TM1 Perspective license will go in C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Application Data\Cognos\TM1. You can take this out if you do not want all
users to have Perspectives. For those users you want to have Perspectives you will
need to their Users\Application Data folder and create an Cognos\ TM1 folder (if one
is not already there and place a TM1p8.lic there

For each user you will need to generate there own perspectives license using the
license manager which will place it in the above explained location.
3 Step 2: Setting up clients as “Domain” users
There are numerous ways to set users profiles on the Citrix server through a Domain
rather than setting them up “locally” through User Manager program.
If this is the route that you plan on taking here are some tips to help get the users
profiles configured correctly.

1. Under the user profiles folder make a folder called TM1 and place the
TM1p.ini in there.
2. Under the \windows folder for the user profiles place the TM1p.lic file.
NOTE: If this is done and only TM1 Client loads NOT TM1 Perspectives it
most likely is the users environment variables pointing to the wrong drive
letter.
To test this out, log in as the user and bring up a DOS window.
at the prompt > echo %windir% (hit return)
at the prompt > cd %windir%
at the prompt > echo %userprofile%
What you should see is a consistent drive letter returning. In this example it shows
that drive F:\ is the main drive of the Citrix server and this domain user is set up
correctly.
This example shows the user logged on the Citrix server and immediately the user is
placed on drive P:\ (for this issue drive P: was a network drive and not a local drive
on the Citrix box). When the user performs the echo %windir% command it sends
back the right information, however, when the user “cd %windir%” he/she is placed
back on drive P:\
A simple way to fix this problem you will need to change the Terminal Service
Home Directory user profiles in usrmgr program:

Say for this example P: was a network drive and the user profile was set like this
If this user brings up a DOS cmd box in Citrix the Prompt will state P:\>
However since TM1 has a hard time reading a network drive from a Citrix server
you can change the parameter to this:
This will change the users directory to read the local drive of the machine.
So now if the local drive was F:\ when the user brings up a DOS cmd box his
prompt should display F:\>
4 Step 3: Setting up Citrix Farm
These steps are written with in mind that a Citrix Farm has already been been
created on the box. When an application such as Excel is part of a Citrix Farm, it
provides a flexible way of deploying TM1 to multiple users.

The idea here is to create a single connection icon for all clients trying to access
Excel and TM1 from the Citrix box. This way the clients do not have to have Excel
nor TM1 installed on their PC.
To do this you need to click on the Presentation Server console button on the
Metaframe menu bar

The following dialog box should appear
•
•
click on Actions->New-Published Application

Once you have made your choices you will need to publish the app so end users can
use it through their desktops. Again this up to the administrator to decided how to
publish this app.

From client desktop you will either connect through HTML or ICA client. These steps
show how to create an ICA Connection.
