1
Introduction
1.1
Purpose
This document provides step by step instructions on how to install and
configure the Symbian simulator for use with IBM Cognos GO! Mobile.
1.2
Applicability
The install instruction were created using the Symbian Simulators and IBM
Cognos 8.3.81.20.

JDK-1_5_0_X Install
In order for the Symbian Device Simulators to work properly, the 1.5.0.X JRE
is required to be installed on the server that is running the simulators.
To do this:
1. Initiate the JDK install by double clicking the jdk-1_5_0_08-windowsi586-p executable.
2. If the license agreement is acceptable select the “I accept the terms in
the licence agreement” and click the Next button.

3. Deselect everything except the Development tools for the install and
select the Next button.
To change the default install path location select the Change button.
Be sure to record the final install path as it will be required later. For
this demonstration the install path will be D:\Apps\Program
Files\Java\jdk1.5.0_08.
4. Once the install is finished, select the finish button

Installing the Java Wireless Toolkit
1. Initiate the install by double clicking on the sun_java_wireless_toolkit2_5_1-windows executable.
2. Select the Next button to proceed.

3. If the license agreement is acceptable select the “Accept” button to
proceed to the next screen.
4. Press the browse button, and enter the path to which the JDK was
installed to. In this particular example the path used was
D:\Apps\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0_08
5. Click OK to commit the path.
6. Select Next to display the following screen.

7. Press the Browse button to select the location the Toolkit is to be
installed at. For this example the path will be C:\WTK2.5.1.
8. Click Next to display the following screen.

Obtain a Local Copy of the cognos_mobile.jad File
In order to run the Go! Mobile in the Symbian Simulator, the computer on
which the simulator has been installed on will require access to the
cognos_mobile.jad file installed with the Cognos 8.3 Mobile install. By
default this file is installed in the Cognos8\webcontent\mobile\symbian
directory.
1. Locate the cognos_mobile.jad found in the ..\Program
Files\Cognos8\webcontent \mobile\symbian directory.
2. Make a copy of this file and copy it to the same computer the Symbian
simulator was installed on. For this particular example the file will be
copied to the root of the D:\ drive.

Launching the Go! Mobile in the Symbian Simulator
IBM Cognos 8 Go! Mobile and the Symbian simulator can be launched via the
command line. To do this:
1. From the Windows Start menu, select available Run… command.
2. Within the Run menu, enter the following command:
<wireless_toolkit_install_path>\bin\emulator Xdescriptor:"<path_to_gomobile_JAD_file>\cognos_mobile.jad"
For the paths used in this example, the complete command would be:
C:\WTK2.5.1\bin\emulator -Xdescriptor:"D:\cognos_mobile.jad"
3. Click OK to launch the symbian simulator. The screen should
represent the following:
