setting up custom Help menus in Executive Viewer.

2 General Tips on Executive Viewer
Have a look at the following items. The small things found here are not the kind of things you
would normally think of. It might help solve some problems. Or it could make working with
Executive Viewer even easier. Just click on the item of interest and a short description will
expand.
Reconnecting to a different database
Executive Viewer can re-map your View from one Database to another. When selecting
another Database in the 'Connection Information' dialog, Executive Viewer will restore the
layout of your sheet as much as possible inside the new Database.
Executive Viewer will tell you in the 'Warnings' dialog of all mappings that occurred.
Sizing Headers
If you double click on the empty area in the table (the one above the row-headers and left
of the column-headers) all headers will be resized to give a perfect fit.
This can be a useful feature when the 'Auto Size Headers' option has been turned off.
What if...
If you want to know what a value should be, for example in a 'what if' analysis, to match a
certain situation, you can do the following:
Make a calculation with the calculator that should give the right result. Use DataEntry to
change the input values. The result of the calculation will be updated immediately when
you have checked the option ‘Refresh Data in Data Entry Mode’ on the ‘Data’ tab of the
‘Options’ dialog. This makes it easy to find what input value you are looking for.
Then you can choose to write the data to your OLAP database or cancel the Data Entry.
Printing specific pages

5
Sometimes when you have just printed a live report and you want to reprint only a couple
of pages. Normally you would have to re-print the entire report in spite of only some
changed pages.
You can prevent this by making a preview of the changed report and identify the page
number of the changed pages. Then press the 'Print' button and only select those pages.
Exclude range
In the 'Sort & Select' dialog you can exclude a range. If the 'From' value in the range is
greater than the 'To' value, the range will work the other way around. Everything greater
than the 'From' value and smaller than the 'To' value will be included.
If you enter a range from 50 to -50, everything under -50 and everything over 50 will be
included.
Formatting multiple rows
By clicking with your secondary mouse button on a member in the Inspread area, you can
select the 'Formatting...' option.
Now you are able to format the member. You may select other members to be formatted
simultaneously with the first selected member. Once you have selected all members to be
formatted, select the appropriate formatting options and Apply.
Variance reporting
When calculating variances, for example between actual and budget results, you may
want to tag all the cast (expense) accounts in Essbase with the expense attribute. This
enables Executive Viewer to perform an intelligent variance calculation, such that for
revenue accounts if revenue has increased there would be a positive variance, while for
cost accounts a decrease would be a positive variance.
If the expense attribute is not set then variance calculations in Executive Viewer will be
based solely on the increase or decrease in the numerical value. This normally means
that an increase in costs is calculated as a positive variance.
Swapping Members
You can easily change the order of members displayed by simply dragging the member to
its new location.
Drag the member to the location where you want the member to appear. When a blue line
shows, indicating where the member will be placed, release the mouse button.
If you want to swap two members, you can drag the first member to its new location, while
pressing the mouse button AND the Ctrl or Shift button. When the member you want to
replace is entirely blue-lined, the members will be swapped.
Cell Values
You can make cross-dimensional calculations with the calculator. You can click on the
individual members to make a combination.
Rounding Values

6
You can determine the amount of decimals. Click on a member with your secondary
mouse button and choose 'Formatting...'. The amount of decimals can be changed. If you
enter a negative value, the values in the cell will be rounded off before the comma. For
example, 2700,08 will become 3000 if you enter '-3' as number of decimals.
Dashboard
Instead of analyzing figures you want to discriminate between positive and negative
values by color. Select 'Styles...' from the Format menu and apply the green background
color to positive values and the red background color to negative values.
3 How to add a Help function in Executive Viewer (Web)
Client
The information in this article applies to:
•
•
•
3.1
Executive Viewer Client, version 6.0 build 1 or higher
Executive Viewer Web Client, all versions
In versions previous to version 4.2 build 1, this Property name was 'EVHelp'
Description
Executive Viewer (Web) Client has the ability to display Online help. Because a help file in
size can easily exceed several Mb's, this is not directly shipped with Executive Viewer (Web)
Client. Instead a link can be made between Executive Viewer (Web) Client and the location
where the Online Help resides.
This online help, in the form of html files, can be custom-made. Cognos's Executive Viewer
User Manual can be used as well. This manual is shipped in a set of html files forming an
online help system. Linking Executive Viewer (Web) Client with these files provides the end
user with the online help.
3.2
How to set the Help Function in Executive Viewer (Web) Client
You can download the Web Help zip file from the Support Center at evsupport.Applix.com.
You need to unzip the contents of this file and place it into your corporate web site, or any
other place users can reach it. The only thing you need to do is point Executive Viewer (Web)
Client to the 'Index.htm' location on the main page of this HTML help. You do this by using the
'Help' Property, which needs to be set on the HTML page containing Executive Viewer (Web)
Client.
The HTML help files are available in English, French, German and Spanish.
3.3
Example
Linking Executive Viewer (Web) Client with a help system would require a line of code in your
HTML file much like:

For the ActiveX control:
<param name="Help"
value="http://www.mycompany.com/evhelp/index.htm">
For the plug-in edition (available in versions prior to version 6.0):
HELP="http://www.mycompany.com/evhelp/index.htm"
This line needs to be added to the other Properties already set on the HTML page.
Once the Property is set, a 'help' button is added to the Executive Viewer toolbar in versions
as of 6.0 build 1:
When working with Sheet tabs you can click with your secondary mouse button on a sheet
tab. The 'Help' option is added:
