1 Introduction
1.1
Purpose
This manual provides instructions for the proper setup and
configuration of Oracle9i Client for IBM Cognos Controller. Once you
have followed the steps in this document, please see the IBM Cognos
Controller Maintenance Guide for information on how to maintain
Oracle9i.

2.1
Technical Information
Hardware and Software
The recommended client and server hardware and software requirements are
outlined in the separately produced document entitled IBM Cognos Controller
Technical Specifications. Please contact the IBM Cognos Support department
for a copy of the most recent version.
Pre-Existing Oracle Installations
If you already have an Oracle9i Client installation, you can use the existing
installation for IBM Cognos Controller if you are running version number
9.0.2.1.0 or later. Invoke the Net Configuration Assistant. (Programs/Oracle –
OraHome92/ Configuration and migration Tools/Net Configuration Assistant)
See step 11 and forward. To identify which version of Oracle you have
installed, connect to a database using the sql*plus utility.
Installing Oracle9i Client
If you have never installed Oracle9i Client, follow the Step-by-Step installation
guide. This describes an Administrator Installation.
NB: These instructions are not intended to replace the Oracle
documentation, nor to discuss all of the possible installation options, but to
assist you in matters that relate to the IBM Cognos Application. You must be
logged on as a user with administrative rights on the server.

2.2
Step by Step installation of Oracle 9i Client
1. Start Windows and log on to the Server with a user account that has
administrative rights on the local machine.
2. Shut down all Windows programs.
3. Insert the Oracle CD in the CD reader.
Result: A window opens, from where you can install Oracle9i.
Choose Install/Deinstall Products.

4. The Welcome window appears. Click Next.

5. Fill in values of where your Oracle home will reside and click Next.

6. Select Oracle9i Client and click Next:

7. Select Administrator and click Next. You can also select the Custom
installation. See Appendix A for the minimum requirement or components.

8. The Summary is shown. Click Install.

15. Enter server name and which port to use. Click Next.

17. Change login and enter a user and password.
18. Enter the Net Service Name and then finish the installation.

Minimal Requirements
When installing Oracle Client, you can choose a variety of components
including Java, Xml, etc. If you want to make a minimal installation of the
Oracle Client, this is what you should
choose:
• Oracle Network Utilities
• Oracle Database Utilities
• SQL*Plus
• Oracle JDBC/OCI Interface
• Oracle Windows Interface
