DPES 2011-12 New Appointment, Professor Artur Izmaylov
Office of the Chair and Graduate Chair
DPES 2011-12 New Appointment, Professor Artur Izmaylov
From: William A. Gough, Chair, DPES; Robert Morris, Graduate Chair, Chemistry
Date: April 14, 2011
The Graduate Chair of Chemistry and I are very pleased to announce that Dr. Artur
Izmaylov has accepted our offer to join the UTSC Department of Physical and
Environmental Sciences and the Graduate Department of Chemistry as an assistant
professor. Dr. Izmaylov will formally take on duties in our department on May 1st, 2012.
Artur received his doctoral and Masters degrees from Rice University in Houston, Texas
in the field of Computational Chemistry. His bachelorʼs degree was awarded by the
Department of Chemistry at Moscow State University.
Dr. Izmaylov is interested in the interaction of atoms and molecules with their
environment. This interaction profoundly influences their behaviour and thus his desire
to include this interaction in theoretical models that predict physical and chemical
properties of matter. He describes the goal of his research, more specifically, “... as the
development of new approaches to modeling the dynamics of systems where quantum
effects are important and interaction with the environment is non-negligible. These
methods will be employed for the understanding of functioning biological and artificial
systems that can utilize solar energy, as well as for the design of new materials with
improved properties.”
