Blended learning as an interactive teaching strategy
Teaching philosophy:
Blended learning and technological pedagogical content knowledge.
Purpose and objectives:
 To promote an interactive learning environment for students.
 To implement educational/IT technology to facilitate the learning process.





Educational challenge addressed:
Address students’ understanding of basic newspaper design elements.
Address students’ competency in designing and producing visual information.
Address students’ ability to use computers and software programmes to create effective visual
communication products.
Address students’ problems solving skills pertaining to layout and design problems.
Implementation of good practice:
Blended learning entails infusing technology with one’s teaching practice. When lecturers use video
tutorials, training videos, and myTUTor consistently, students have to engage with learning content
in a more collaborative, interactive manner. Lecturers have to use technology during each class:
i.e. students need to work on computers and use software; learning content must be digitalised and
uploaded onto a content management platform (myTUTor); video tutorials and/or video recordings
of lectures must be available on myTUTor.
Reflection:
Blended learning aids lecturers to reflect on their own pedagogical practices. When technology is
employed to enhance students’ learning experience, learners have the opportunity to interact with
learning content.
VALUE ADDED BY GOOD PRACTICE
The blended learning approach is student-centred and students’ assessment (test and assignment)
results reflect a definite improvement after the blended learning approach was introduced.
[Annexure B _ DQP/Good Practices Project _ 14/08/2013]
Blended learning resulted in the creation of an interactive classroom.
Educational/IT technology can be seamlessly implemented in a classroom if the necessary
equipment (computers, Internet, servers, data projector, and computer software) is available.
EVIDENCE (Hyperlink)
A complete research paper on blended learning and the effect it had on student results can be
obtained from Hilke Steenkamp ([email protected]).
FACTORS WHICH FACILITATED ADOPTION OF GOOD PRACTICE





Availability of equipment and facilities: functioning computers for students to work on in a
computer laboratory
Internet access in computer laboratory
Students’ access to myTUTor
Lecturer’s computer skills to produce video tutorials/training videos
Functionality of software programmes (Camtasia, Adobe Creative Suite)
