Towardsamodel‐basedneuroscienceofhowwe
representotherpeople
Thinkingaboutotherpeoplereliesoncomplexandimpreciserepresentationsof
individualsandsocialgroups.Italsorequiresthatweupdatethoserepresentationsinlight
ofnewinformation,integratemultiplesourcesofinformation,andefficientlydeployallof
thistoguideourinteractions.Socialpsychologyhaslonginvestigatedtheprocesses
involved,andsocialneurosciencehasbeguntoidentifytheirneuralcorrelates.Still
missing,however,isacomprehensive,theoretically‐informed,andmechanistic
understandingofthespecificneuralcomputationsthatconstitutesuchsocialprocesses.My
researchstartswiththeoreticalconstructsofpersonrepresentationfrompsychology(e.g.
traitlearning,implicitevaluations,theoryofmind),andreconstruesthemwithinthe
model‐basedframeworkofcomputationalneuroscience.Itslong‐termgoalisthe
constructionofacomprehensivemodeloftheneuralcomputationsunderlyingperson
representation,includingmodulationbycomplexfactorssuchasemotionalorattentional
states.InthistalkIwillpresentdataontheinfluenceofracebiasontrustjudgmentsand
decisions,aswellasthecomputationalprocessesthroughwhichwelearnabout
individuals’traitsandintentions(i.e.,theoryofmind),andhowtheseprocessesmightbe
disruptedinindividualswithsocialimpairments(e.g.AutismSpectrumDisorder).
