Cyclists are subject to
the same traffic laws as
motor vehicles, except
for laws applying specifically to motor vehicles.
Obey all stop signs and
traffic signals.
Always wear a bicycle
helmet when riding.
Be courteous – do not
block traffic. Riding
two-abreast in a traffic
lane is legal in Georgia.
However, it shows common courtesy to ride
single file when traffic is
attempting to pass.
Never ride against traffic. Ride in the right
hand traffic lane with
the flow of traffic.
Signal to other road
users. Use hand signals
to indicate your intentions to turn and stop.
Pull entirely off the road
if you need to stop for
any reason other than
a traffic signal, stopped
traffic, or a traffic light.
Wear brightly colored
clothing to increase
your visibility. Orange,
yellow, and fluorescent
green are highly recommended in traffic.
Use lights in low visibility
conditions and at night.
A white headlight and
a flashing red tail light
and red reflector are
required by law and will
make you much more
visible.

• Monthly Courteous Mass rides demonstrate the
viability of bicycles as transportation and provide
cyclists an opportunity to practice safe riding skills in
a comfortable environment.

• Our Bike Recycling Program collects and repairs
donated bikes and distributes them through social

• Safe Routes Athens. Our local organization for the
nationally recognized Safe Routes to School program
provides resources to help kids and their parents to
walk, bicycle, or take the bus to school, encouraging
physical activity among school-age children while
making our streets safer for those who cannot or do
not drive.

• Advocacy and Outreach. We continuously work
with government officials at the local, state and

ror to monitor traffic
approaching from
behind without turning
your head.
Plan to stop if you’re
approaching a yellow
light. Bicycles usually
move slower than cars,
so you probably won’t
have time to clear the
light on your bike.
Pass others on the left,
not on the right. Other
road users are not
expecting vehicles to
pass on the right.
Use caution at driveways and curb cuts.
Cars entering and leaving the road from parking lots and driveways
pose a major hazard for
cyclists.
Use extra caution
around large vehicles
like trucks and buses.
Drivers of these vehicles
have "blind spots" where
they cannot see you,
and take longer to stop.
Ride in a predictable
manner. Avoid sudden,
unexpected movements
and do not weave in
and out of traffic.
Don't follow too closely.
Leave a gap between
you and any cyclists in
front of you.
Yield to pedestrians
when riding on a multiuse path. They always
have the right-of-way.

ASSOCIATION, INC. (doing business as ‘BikeAthens’)
