Course Description:
An introduction to the structure and functions of the human body is provided. Topics include chemistry, histology, and
study of the integumentary, skeletal, muscular and nervous systems. In a lecture science course where there is a
required co-requisite lab, students may withdraw from the lab class, but stay in the lecture class. (Students may also
choose to withdraw from both). Students will not be allowed to withdraw from the lecture and remain enrolled in the
lab. (*)

Course Learning Outcomes: As a result of taking this course, the student will be able to:
• Describe the basics in the property of atoms, acids, bases; which are the biological/organic molecules that makeup the
human structure.
• Describe the structure of eukaryotic/human cell and its component organelles along with its functions.
• Describe the various histological components for each organ of the body and its functional correlation.
• Describe the components of the integumentary, skeletal, muscular and nervous systems and the interactions of these
systems with the rest of the body.

Academic dishonesty includes the following actions, as well as other similar conduct aimed at making false
representation with respect to the student's academic performance: (1) Cheating on an exam, (2) Collaborating with
others on work to be presented, if contrary to the stated rules of the course,

(3) Submitting, if contrary to the rules of the course, work previously submitted in another course, (4) Knowingly and
intentionally assisting another student in any of the above actions, including assistance in an arrangement whereby
work, classroom performance, examination, or other activity is submitted or performed by a person other than the
student under whose name the work is submitted or performed, (5) Plagiarism (Professor will use SafeAssign plagarism
detection tools).
Penalty: Any dishonesty action will result on a zero (0) in the exam, quiz, or assigment. If any of these actions are
repeated, student will be removed for the class with a failing grade (F) for the class (it does not matter how well the
student is doing in the class).
Assignments, Tests, Quizzes and Final Exam Schedule, with percentage/points of grade:
Exams will have 100 points/exam. Each exam will cover atleast three to four chapters. Tentative schedule with
chapters covered and dates (subject to change) will be given and the actual date for the exams will be announced in
class. There will be FOUR Exams including a FINAL EXAM during the finals week. Your final grade will be determined by
averaging all the four exams (see table below).
Grades will be given only in person, PLEASE , not via email or over the phone or to anyone else.
SCANTRONS will be required. Scantrons must be without any fold and always kept in a folder or notebook before use.
The student is responsible for any error on scantron or bad scantron. Please have spare scantron, sharpened pencil,
eraser handy for the exams.

Class Policies
Attendance: Professors are required to take attendance.
Attendance will be taken regularly. Regular and timely attendance is expected and required.
Electronic Device Use and Email Policy:
Cell phones are to be silenced during class time. For an emergency call please tell the instructor and take the call outside
of the classroom. It should be a rare event that you must take a call during class. Laptops may be used to take notes. If it
is apparent that laptops are being used for other purposes, student will be dismissed from the class. Handheld PDAs
should not be used in class. Cell phones must be kept out of the student desk. First time, students will be warned
politely about the cell phone policy. The second time, student will be dismissed from the class and his/her name
removed from the roster .

Make-up Exam Policy:
No make-up exams will be given. Plrase inform me via email within 24 hours, if you have a medical or family
emergency. Makeup exams will be available only with a written letter for your absence, i.e. medical, legal, etc. signed
and dated by the party responsible for your absence. Students must provide notice of their absence prior to the exam or
the day of the exam. Makeup exams will not be given without such timely notice. Makeup exams must be scheduled to
be taken within five (5) days of the missed exam.
Withdrawal Policy:
The last day to withdraw from a College course with a "W" grade in this course is JULY 26, 2016.
It is the responsibility of the student to use the PantherWeb system or visit a campus Registrar’s office to withdraw.
An official withdrawal entitles the student to a grade of "W" in the class.
Other:
E-mail Policy: Students must use exclusively their Palm Beach State College e-mail account to
communicate with the Professor. E-mails coming from other accounts will be dismissed. When sending emails, students must provide basic information before asking a question (name, class, time). I will try to
respond e-mails promptly (24 hours or less) except week-end e-mails. Grades will be provided via the college’s
online grading system, in writing and/or in person, with the student only.

Classroom Etiquette and Student Behavior Guidelines
Students will demonstrate respect for professors and fellow students. Behavior that is disruptive to a positive learning environment
reported by the professor will result in a warning on the first instance; the second instance might result in expulsion from the course
or campus.
Computer Competency Component
Each student will, to the satisfaction of the professor, demonstrate a fundamental understanding of basic computer operations
through various professor-determined exercises and/or assignments.

The evaluation of academic work is the responsibility of the faculty member/instructor. The method for assigning the final course
grade is established by the faculty member/instructor. Per Board Rule 6Hx-18-3.191, faculty/instructors shall communicate the
grading policy of the course to their students in writing. If this policy changes during the term, students should be notified of any
changes in writing. The method to determine final course grades must be given to students in a course syllabus at the beginning of
the class. Should a student have a question about a final course grade, please follow the procedures as outlined in the student

Mid-Term Grade Reporting
Within one week after the close of the mid-term grading period, mid-term grades will be made available to all students for each
class by either written notification or individual conference.
Student Responsibility Policy
When a student attends the College, s/he becomes subject to its jurisdiction. Students are expected to conduct themselves in a
responsible manner, in all areas of campus life. By enrolling, they pledge to obey the rules and regulations of the College and are
responsible for observing all College policies and procedures as published in the student handbook, the College catalog and other
College publications. The student will be responsible for preparing for class, participating in class, and completing assignments on
time.
