Could a nontraditional career
be right for you?
Think about this: Information technology and
health care are among the fastest growing fields,
yet only 16.5 percent of computer systems
administrators are women, and only 9.6 percent
of registered nurses are men.
The choice
is yours.
The reason isn’t that men or women are
better at these jobs.
Put aside the outdated notion that gender
determines career choice! You owe it to yourself
to consider any career that syncs up with your
interests, goals and aptitudes. There are just too
many great opportunities in nontraditional
fields for both women and men. Plus, many
potential rewards await you.
Instead, gender stereotypes cloud our perceptions
of what we can do. But perceptions (and people)
can change.
A nontraditional
occupation
is one in which
25% or less
of the workforce
is of one gender.
