Palm Beach State College Practical Nursing Program Electronic Information Session Spring 2017 Enrollment Deadline: November 1, 2016 The Practical Nursing (PN) Program An Overview The Practical Nursing Program at Palm Beach State is a twelve month program that includes the following courses: HSC0003 (Introduction to Health Care Concepts) HSC0003L (Introduction to Health Care Concepts Lab) HCP0121C (Nursing Aid & Orderly Articulated) PRN0061C (Concepts of Fundamentals of Nursing1) PRN0062C (Concepts of Fundamentals of Nursing 2) PRN0063C (Concepts of Practical Nursing 1) PRN0069C (Concepts of Practical Nursing 2) PRN0064C (Transitions Into Practical Nursing) Students who complete this program will have the following completion certificates: Practical Nursing (PN) This program is approved by the Florida Board of Nursing. Students who complete this program will be eligible to take the NCLEX-PN exam in order to receive their PN license in the State of Florida. The Practical Nursing (PN) Program Program Hours and Expectations The program scheduled hours for class time are as follows: Monday through Thursday: Classroom Hours 8am – 4:30pm (Hybrid Courses) Clinical Hours 7am – 3:30pm (Some Friday and/or Saturday clinicals may be required.) The Practical Nursing program is considered a HYBRID COURSE (50% online and 50% classroom experience); students must be comfortable with using a computer and taking an online course on blackboard. Students must also have reliable access to a computer and internet in order to be successful in the program. Clincials are scheduled in healthcare facilities throughout Palm Beach County. Students may be assigned a clinical site anywhere in Palm Beach County. Students are responsible for the transportation to a clinical site, so reliable transportation is important to be successful in the program. Requirements for the PN Program Education and Admission Requirements The PN program’s Admissions Requirements are as follows: Complete a PSAV application on the Palm Beach State College website at: www.palmbeachstate.edu/admissions/admissions-applications. Students must submit high school and/or college transcripts from all accredited institutions that they have previously attended to the Admissions/Registration Office. Students who have a degree from an accredited university (Associates, Bachelors, Masters) are not required to submit high school transcripts if their college transcripts are already on file with the Admissions/Registration Office. Student has to attempt TABE OR qualify for TABE Exemption. All scores are valid for two years after the date the test was taken. Students must achieve 11th grade Reading, Language, and Total Math to complete the Practical Nursing program. Students are required to achieve this passing score on the TABE by the end of the Practical Nursing program. Complete the HESI A2 exam. See slide four and five for HESI exam information. Complete the electronic information session quiz at the end of this presentation with an 100%. Complete and submit the PN Application to the Admission/Registration Office by the Application Deadline. The HESI Admission Assessment (A2) Exam Information on Exam Procedures The HESI exam covers the following (nine) sections: Reading Comprehension Grammar Vocabulary and General Knowledge Biology Chemistry Anatomy & Physiology Math Learning Style Inventory Personality Traits Profile The HESI exam replaced the TEAS exam starting in the Spring 2016 application period. Students who wish to be considered for the PN application pool must make a cumulative score of at least 75 on all sections (the composite score), and a score of at least a 75 on the Math section of the exam. The HESI A2 Exam (Continued) Information on Exam Procedures The HESI exam may be taken every 61 days, up to three times in a calendar year. A student’s HESI exam score is valid for up to two years after the date it was taken. Students at the Palm Beach Gardens, Belle Glade, and Boca Raton campuses must make appointments with the Testing Centers of their respective campuses in order to take the HESI exam. Students at the Lake Worth campus are able to walk-in to take the HESI exam at the Lake Worth Testing Center, providing they arrive at the Testing Center before 2:00pm on their desired testing day. The cost of the HESI exam is $60.00 and must be paid on the day of testing. Students must review complete the Testing Center’s Student Registration Requirements regardless of which campus they intend to take the exam at. The method recommended to study for the HESI exam is the HESI Admission Assessment Exam Review study guide (available at most bookstores and online). Students can also review these HESI exam practice questions, or register for the following courses for HESI exam preparation: NRO0161-Hesi Admission Exam Review Language Arts NRO0162 – Hesi Admission Exam Review Math/Science The Practical Nursing Program Point System for Applicant Selection Selection into the Practical Nursing Program follows a point system based on the following criteria: Requirement Score/Requirement Needed for Points Points Earned HESI Exam Score 96-100 10 91-95 9 86-90 8 81-85 7 76-80 6 75 5 Up to 29 college credits 1 30 or more college credits or AS-AA Degree 2 Bachelor’s Degree 3 Master’s Degree or Higher 4 Program Completers Completion of a Health Occupation program from a regionally accredited school with a minimum of 150 clock hours. (Must provide official completion certificate in order to receive credit.) 2 Strategies for Program Success Seminar (VPI0400) Complete with an (S) Satisfactory in order to receive credit. 2 Active Duty and Veterans Active duty service member or a military veteran (The applicant must submit a copy of the DD214 with honorable discharge with application.) 1 Education Total Possible Points 19 The Practical Nursing Program Applicant Selection Meeting all of the minimal requirements does not guarantee acceptance into the Practical Nursing Program. Students will be notified approximately two weeks after the application deadline date if they are accepted. All students will be contacted through their Palm Beach State student e-mail accounts. Students can also verify the status of their applications by visiting their limited access page located on their student Pantherweb Account. If a student is not selected for the Practical Nursing Program for this application cycle, the student must re-apply and re-take the electronic information session quiz during the next cycle in order to be considered again in the applicant pool. Applications do not roll over to the next application cycle. Please be advised that these are estimates and cost can fluctuate based on the vendors prices. The Practical Nursing(LPN) Program Scholarships, Financial Aid, and the Tuition Payment Plan The Practical Nursing program is eligible to receive financial aid, and there are scholarship opportunities available through Palm Beach State College’s Foundation Office or through outside agencies. Please visit the Financial Aid website for more information on the application process and to apply for aid. The Foundation Office at Palm Beach State would have information on all scholarships offered at Palm Beach State. You would need to apply and complete their scholarship requirements to see if you qualify. Outside agencies, like CareerSource, provide financial assistance and scholarships to students who meet their eligibility requirements. You would need to contact these agencies directly for more information. Students can also register for the Tuition Payment Plan on their student Pantherweb portal to pay for their classes in increments. Requirements for the PN Program Medical and FDLE Requirements After a student is accepted into the Practical Nursing Program, they are required to complete the following Medical and FDLE Requirements: Competed Medical Exam form with a physical completed by a licensed physician, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner. Medical form required proof of the following: Proof that you do not have active TB: PPD results or Chest X-ray. (PPD must be completed within the year)(Chest x-ray must be completed within the last two years) Titers (bloodwork) or shot records showing that you have immunity to Rubeola (Measles), Rubella (German Measles), and Varicella (Chickenpox). RESULTS (BLOODWORK OR SHOT RECORDS) MUST HAVE BEEN COMPLETED WITHIN THE LAST 10 YEARS. Shot Record (within last 10 years) showing proof that you have received a Tetanus Pertussis shot. Proof of a flu shot (during flu season: August-March) Completed Level I Background and Drug screen. (Completed through CastleBranch Student Portal) Please review the Background/Drug Screen Requirements needed for students to be eligible for the program. Students are encouraged to check with the Board of Nursing at (850) 245-4125 if you have questions regarding your background/FDLE with Florida’s certification requirements. Completed Level II Fingerprinting. (Completed through CastleBranch Student Portal) All records will be sent directly to the Clinical Coordinator and will be kept in a confidential file. These files will not be part of the student’s college records. The Practical Nursing Program Program Admission Checklist The deadline for the Spring 2017 application period is November 1, 2016. If an application deadline falls on the weekend (Saturday and/or Sunday), the application deadline is extended to the next business day. Students must submit the following information to the Admission/Registration Office (PG 119) in order to be eligible by the deadline. A completed Application with any supplemental documentation. Supplemental documentation includes: A completed 100% Information Session quiz printout. A program Completion Certificate from a Health Occupations Program (if applicable). A copy of your DD214 with honorable discharge (Active Duty and Military Veterans ONLY). Students must also have complete and valid HESI A2 and TABE (if applicable) exam scores on file with the Admission/Registration by the deadline. Students who have not already done so, must make sure that their declared major is the Practical Nursing Program (Program Code: 5234) before registering for ANY PN classes. In order to change your major, you must submit a Program Objective Change form to the Admission/Registration Office.
