MIT Mobile Fab Lab
The MIT Mobile Fab Lab is an advanced manufacturing fabrication laboratory on wheels. Equipped with the latest
industry-grade equipment, the Fab Lab offers students the opportunity to the learn how to use leading-edge
machinery to solve real-world problems and develop skills to rapidly design, test and prototype innovations.
A variety of jobs exist in advanced manufacturing and robotics, and the MIT Mobile Fab Lab program can help
students build a future path to college and careers.
3D Printer
Robotic Arm
Laser Engraver
CNC Lathe
CNC Router
Vinyl Cutter
3D printers are used for making
three-dimensional solid objects
from a digital file. The 3D printed
objects are created through the
additive process; laying down
successive layers of material until
the entire object is created.
The most common manufacturing
robot is the robotic arm. It is made
up of seven metal segments, joined
by six joints. A computer controls
the robot by rotating individual step
motors connected to each joint in
exact increments. This allows the
computer to move the arm very
precisely, repeating exactly the same
movement over and over again.
A laser engraving machine can be
thought of as three main parts: a
laser, a controller and a surface.
The controller (usually a computer)
controls the direction, intensity,
speed of movement and spread of
the laser beam aimed at the surface.
The surface is picked to match what
the laser can act on.
A lathe is a machine that shapes
pieces of material. The lathe rotates
a work piece on its axis to perform
various operations, including:
cutting, sanding, knurling, drilling,
deformation, facing or turning.
Lathes are typically used in wood
turning, metalworking, metal
spinning, thermal spaying, parts
reclamation and glass working.
A CNC router is a computercontrolled machine for cutting
various hard materials, such as
wood, composites, aluminum, steel,
plastics and foams. CNC routers can
help ensure part repeatability and
sufficient factory output.
A vinyl cutter is a type of
computer-controlled machine.
The computer controls the
movement of a sharp blade. This
blade is used to cut out shapes
and letters from sheets of vinyl.
