WHAT DO THESE WORDS MEAN?

POR and PARA are often two of the most confusing
words in the Spanish language.

This is due to the fact that both words have the same
English translation.
 Both of the words translate
to mean “FOR”

WHAT ARE THE RULES?

Each word has their own sets of rules to help you
figure out which words goes in the place of the word
“for” in sentences!

It is important to know the different rules because the
different words can cause the meaning of the
sentence to change.



To express GRATITUDE
Ex: Gracias por el consejo.
 (THANK YOU FOR THE ADVICE)


For MULTIPLICATION and DIVISION
Ex: Cinco por cinco son veinticinco.
 (FIVE TIMES FIVE EQUALS TWENTY FIVE.)


To express LENGTH of TIME
Ex: ¡Tú dormiste por diez horas!
 (YOU SLEPT FOR TEN HOURS!)


REASON for ACTION
Ex: Voy por ti a las ocho para ir conmigo a la
tienda.
 (I WILL COME GET YOU AT 8:00 TO GO WITH
ME TO THE STORE.)


To express CAUSE
Ex: El hombre murió por la paz mundial.

Passive Constructions
Ex: La comida fue preparada por máma.
 (THE FOOD WAS PREPARED BY MOM.)


COMMUNICATION or TRANSPORTATION
Ex: ¿Prefieres viajar por coche?
 (DO YOU PREFER TO TRAVEL BY CAR?)






“IN ORDER TO” / “FOR THE PURPOSE OF”
Ex: Para hacer bien en el examen, necesitas
estudiar.

MUST STUDY.)


INDICATE RECIPIENT
Ex: Esta comida es para mi padre.

Ex: La tarea es para el jueves.

Ex: Para un trabajador nuevo, el sabe mucho.
